Special series: Five ways to experience the Ecological Route

Flavours of the Route: what to eat in Milagres

On the Ecological Route, getting to know the land also happens at the table: coconut, fresh fish, seafood, a cocada after the beach.

Fish and seafood from the cuisine of the Ecological Route of Milagres

On the Ecological Route, getting to know the land also happens at the table. It is in the coconut, the fresh fish, the seafood, a cocada after the beach, a coffee, or a meal cooked at home. In this fourth chapter of our series, we leave the sea for a few hours to discover another way of experiencing Milagres: through its flavours, its produce and the freedom to decide where, and how, we want to eat.

The region has three food villages, plus excellent restaurants, bars, cafés, ice-cream shops and markets. But the experience doesn't end when we go out to eat. At Pontal, we also help bring the land to the table: our guests have a shopping service, help organising and receiving groceries at the house, and a complete food guide prepared by our team.

What ends up on the table

The cuisine of the region is directly tied to the sea, the rivers and the produce of the Northeast.

Octopus, oysters, massunim, pitu, lagostim and different kinds of fish appear on menus and in dishes all along the Route. Among them are peixe-agulha, pescada, dourada and robalo.

Coconut goes into many recipes, sweet and savoury. Cuscuz and carne de sol are also part of many tables, breakfasts and dishes of Northeastern cooking.

And then there is cocada.

White, toasted, creamy or firmer, it is one of those sweets worth trying more than once during a trip.

A day can start with cuscuz, go on with fish or seafood and end with a cocada. The next day, the menu can be completely different.

Three food villages and plenty of choice

The Ecological Route today has three food villages and a range that goes far beyond traditional regional cooking.

There are restaurants in different styles, bars, small tables, cafés, ice-cream shops and places working with contemporary cooking and local produce.

That lets you organise your days in very different ways.

You can go out for lunch and come back home. Pick a restaurant for the evening. Stop for a coffee. Get an ice cream after the beach. Or stop by the market and cook something at the house.

For anyone staying several days, that variety matters. Not every meal has to become an event.

The market is part of the trip too

Groceries and kitchen at Pontal da Enseada in Tatuamunha

Staying in a house changes your relationship with food.

You don't have to depend on restaurants for every meal or plan each day around a booking.

Fruit, coconut water, drinks, breakfast ingredients, fish, cheese, bread and whatever each family likes to have can be part of the groceries for your stay.

At Pontal da Enseada, guests can request our grocery service. We help organise the shopping and have it delivered to the house, so that part of the kitchen is already taken care of before or during your stay.

For families, groups of friends or travellers who like to alternate between restaurants and meals at home, this makes a practical difference.

Eating out or staying in

One night may call for a restaurant.

Another may end with a meal at the house.

You can also combine beach days with a lunch out, come back to Pontal and not go out again for dinner.

The advantage is not in choosing between “eating out” and “cooking”. It is in being able to do both on the same trip.

Pontal works exactly on that logic: the independence of a house, with services that can be organised around each stay.

A guide that stays with our guests

In our public content we talk about ingredients, places and possibilities.

But the complete recommendations are not all here.

Pontal guests receive an exclusive food guide, prepared and kept up to date by our team, with restaurants, bars, cafés, ice-cream shops, markets and other recommendations along the Ecological Route.

We also help with bookings and with organising meals when needed.

Because knowing that good restaurants exist is easy.

Knowing which one to choose for each day, each group and each occasion takes knowing the region better. Meet the houses and see how to get here.
